What a 12V Battery Means in Storage Projects
In many storage and off-grid systems, a 12 V battery is the common bus that connects panels, controllers, inverters and loads. Buyers searching for a 12v battery are usually planning a small or medium storage system, a backup supply for communication or monitoring equipment, or a mobile power unit. The term covers several chemistries, so the first step is to specify the chemistry as well as the voltage.
For this use, a 12V LiFePO4 pack is typically built from four cells in series. The nominal voltage of such a pack is 12.8 V, and the charge end voltage is about 14.6 V. The name 12V is therefore a nominal class, and the working window of the pack should be checked against the controller and the inverter.
Step 1: Confirm the Voltage Window
A 12.8V LiFePO4 pack does not operate at the same voltage through its entire capacity. Over most of the discharge it stays near 12.4 to 13.2 V, which is a flat plateau. The pack's working range is wider, and the BMS stops discharge and charge at the protection limits. YueQi catalog pages list an operating range of 11 to 14.6 V for the 12.8V pack family, with the discharge temperature range stated as -20 to +60 C.
Check three voltage values with the supplier: the nominal voltage, the maximum charge voltage and the low-voltage cut-off. Then set the charge controller and the inverter to match. A charger or controller that uses a lead-acid profile may not match the LFP curve and should be reviewed before connection.
Step 2: Choose Capacity by Energy Need
Capacity in amp-hours is only part of the answer. Energy in watt-hours is the product of voltage and capacity. The table below shows the energy of several 12.8V packs listed in the YueQi catalog.
| Nominal voltage | Nominal capacity | Nominal energy | Catalog note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12.8 V | 100 Ah | 1,280 Wh | Continuous discharge rating to be confirmed |
| 12.8 V | 150 Ah | 1,920 Wh | Dimensions listed on catalog page 11 |
| 12.8 V | 200 Ah | 2,560 Wh | Parallel connection listed on catalog page 12 |
| 12.8 V | 300 Ah | 3,840 Wh | Listed on catalog page 12 only; to be confirmed |
To estimate the pack size, divide the daily energy need by the usable energy per pack, then add a margin for losses and for the days without sun in a solar system. Usable energy is lower than rated energy because the BMS keeps a reserve, so the usable figure should come from the supplier.
Step 3: Check the Continuous Current
An inverter or motor load can draw a high current for a short time. The continuous discharge current of the pack must be high enough for the largest steady load, and the peak must be checked against the BMS limit. Ask the supplier whether the current rating comes from the cells or from the BMS, and whether the rating depends on temperature.
The catalog pages for YueQi 12.8V packs list different discharge and charge current values for the same capacity points. These differences are noted for confirmation, and the figures should be verified before the pack is used in a design.
Step 4: Plan the Charger and the Controller
A LiFePO4 12V pack needs a charger or solar controller with a LiFePO4 profile. The charge voltage should be set near 14.6 V for a 4S pack, and the charge current should match the pack's rating. An incorrect profile can reduce the cycle life or trigger protection events. The charger should also be able to receive temperature data if the pack is installed in a cold area, because charging at low temperature is limited on most LFP packs.
- Select a charger with a LiFePO4 mode or a custom voltage setting
- Match the charge current to the pack rating and the cable size
- Confirm the low-temperature charging rule with the supplier
- Check that the controller can communicate with the BMS if the pack has a communication port
Step 5: Confirm Parallel Connection and Wiring
Some 12.8V models are listed as able to run in parallel, with up to 10 units in the catalog, subject to confirmation. Parallel connection increases capacity and current, but it requires matched packs, correct cable sizing and a plan for fusing and isolation. Do not mix packs of different age or capacity. Ask the supplier for the wiring diagram and the parallel rules before you design the bank.
Step 6: Certification and Documents
For export and for the destination market, request certificate copies for the model you buy. The YueQi catalog for 12.8V packs lists the UN 38.3 transport test and shows the CE mark on the product literature. Certificate copies available on request. A safety data sheet is supplied with the shipment, but a safety data sheet is not a product certificate and should not be used as one.
Matching the Pack to the Load Pattern
Two projects with the same 12.8V pack can need very different designs. A system that runs a small fridge overnight and charges a phone in the day has a steady, light load. A system that runs a pump or a small tool for short periods has a high peak, and the continuous current and the BMS limit become the deciding factors. Write down the load pattern in watts and hours for each circuit, the longest expected run without sun, and the highest peak. Send these numbers with the application to the supplier, so that the proposed pack and its configuration can be checked against the real load rather than a general capacity figure.
Common Mistakes When Buying a 12V Pack
- Choosing by voltage name only, without checking the chemistry
- Connecting an LFP pack to a lead-acid charger profile
- Ignoring the continuous current and sizing only by capacity
- Assuming a parallel configuration without a written rule from the supplier
- Accepting a certification claim without checking the model number and the scope
Summary
A 12V LiFePO4 battery is a sound choice for solar, off-grid and backup systems when the voltage window, capacity, current rating, charger profile and certificate scope are all confirmed. YueQi offers 12.8V packs with catalog specifications, and every figure that needs confirmation is marked for written verification before it is used in a design or quotation.
