Why Data Centers Revisit Their Battery Choice
In an uninterruptible power supply, the battery is the component that decides both the floor space and the maintenance budget. Data centers, network rooms and industrial control rooms have historically run valve-regulated lead-acid strings, and two pressures now push buyers to lithium: floor space has become the scarcest resource in a facility, and operators want batteries that report their own condition instead of waiting for an annual discharge test. LiFePO4 answers both pressures, which is why lithium battery strings increasingly appear in new UPS projects from edge rooms to large halls.
What UPS Duty Does to a Battery
Most UPS batteries spend their life on float, full and idle, then must deliver everything at once during an outage. That profile affects lead-acid and lithium differently. Lead-acid ages on float and loses life with every deep event and every hot month. LiFePO4 holds a high state of charge well and delivers high current on demand, so the float years cost it less. Where the UPS feeds a site that cycles daily, such as a peak-shaving application, lithium's cycle advantage grows further, because daily deep cycling is the condition lead-acid handles worst.
Comparing VRLA and LiFePO4 for Backup
| Aspect | VRLA | LiFePO4 |
|---|---|---|
| Usable share of rated energy | Limited, planned conservatively | Higher, planned near 80 percent |
| Floor loading and volume | Heavy, large footprint | Lighter and smaller at equal usable energy |
| Daily cycling | Strongly life-limiting | Designed for it |
| Condition data | External probes and tests | Reported by the pack BMS |
| High-temperature aging | Roughly halves life per 10 C rise, a common rule of thumb | Ages too, with lower sensitivity |
The comparison rarely ends with lithium losing on engineering merit; where it loses today is on upfront price in some regions and on installer familiarity. Both gaps close with volume and with commissioning experience.
Sizing Runtime and Strings
UPS sizing works in kilowatts and minutes. A 100 kW load with a ten-minute ride-through to generator pickup needs far less energy than the same load held for two hours, and the difference changes the architecture: short ride-through favors high-power strings, long autonomy favors energy-oriented packs. The calculation is energy divided by usable depth: ten minutes at 100 kW is about 17 kWh of delivered energy, so a lithium design plans roughly 21 kWh of rated storage. Strings are then built from 51.2V class packs in parallel until the energy and current targets are met, with the UPS charger and the pack current limits checked against each other. Rack formats, parallel limits and charger profiles for a specific UPS are to be confirmed in writing with the supplier.
Monitoring and the BMS
The operational argument for lithium in a data room is visibility. A pack whose BMS reports cell voltages, temperatures, current and state of charge over CAN or RS485 can hand that data to the UPS controller or a gateway, which forwards it to the facility management system. The buyer's questions are concrete: which alarms the BMS raises, which protocols it speaks, whether a written protocol document exists, and how a pack signals end of life. Batteries that report their condition let operators replace by measurement instead of by calendar, which removes both premature replacement and the risk of discovering a weak string during an outage.
Integration is easiest when it is tested before delivery. A commissioning routine that checks communication polling, alarm forwarding and a controlled discharge at a fraction of rated load turns the monitoring promise into evidence, and it produces a baseline report that facility teams can compare against year after year. Ask whether the supplier can support that routine with documents and, where needed, configuration guidance for the gateway or UPS in use, so that the first battery installation does not become an integration project run by trial and error.
Safety, Codes and the Room Around the Battery
A battery installation is a system: cabling, fusing, ventilation, signage, fire detection and the room's construction all follow the local electrical code. Lithium removes the hydrogen ventilation duty that flooded lead-acid imposed, but it introduces thermal considerations of its own, and facilities teams should place packs with service access and detector coverage in mind. On compliance, the baseline export documents are CE and UN 38.3; data center operators and certifiers frequently specify additional market standards for stationary storage, and each such requirement should be confirmed in writing per model rather than assumed. Certificate copies should be kept on file with model numbers matching the datasheet.
Buyer Checks for Integrators
- Usable energy and cycle-life test conditions for the exact model, in writing
- Continuous discharge and recharge limits, in single packs and in parallel strings
- BMS alarm list, communication protocol document and gateway compatibility
- Short-circuit protection coordination between pack, string and UPS input
- Certificate copies for CE and UN 38.3 per model, plus the written plan for market-specific standards
- Commercial terms, spares policy and packaging, confirmed in writing
Where YueQi Fits
YueQi New Energy, based in Zhongshan, Guangdong, builds LiFePO4 packs on 12.8V, 25.6V and 51.2V platforms. The 51.2V mobile storage line spans the 5 kWh to 15 kWh class and lists CAN, RS232 and RS485 interfaces, the links a UPS integration normally uses. Rack formats matched to specific UPS brands, parallel configurations and market-specific certification plans are to be confirmed in writing against the current catalog. CE and UN 38.3 certificates are available on request for the relevant product families.
Summary
For UPS and data center backup, lithium battery strings change the physics of the battery room: less floor space and weight, higher usable energy, tolerance of daily cycling where peak shaving demands it, and, above all, condition data that turns replacement into a measured decision. The buying work sits in the written details: usable energy with test conditions, current limits, protocol documents and a certification plan per market. Facilities that work through that list once gain a battery platform that serves rooms of every size.
