Why the Warranty Text Matters More Than the Number
Warranty comparisons between LiFePO4 suppliers usually start and end with the headline figure, such as the number of years. The number is the least informative part of the document. What decides whether a claim is paid is the definition behind it: what counts as the end of the battery's warranted life, under which operating conditions, proven by whose test, and resolved through which process. Two ten-year warranties can behave completely differently once a real failure meets the exclusions list.
For a B2B importer the warranty is also a commercial instrument. It is the text you extend, in your own words, to your installers and end customers, so the terms you sign become the terms you must honor downstream.
Duration and Cycle Count: How the Two Combine
Storage battery warranties are usually framed in years, in cycles, or both, with the warranty ending at whichever limit arrives first. Neither figure means anything alone. A cycle count is only defined once the document states the depth of discharge, the charge and discharge rates, the temperature range and the end-of-life capacity level that the count assumes. A year count is only defined once the document states whether it runs from production date, shipment date or commissioning date, and whether registration is required. When reviewing an offer, ask the supplier to state all of these conditions next to the headline figure, and to confirm them in writing for the exact model.
Capacity Retention: The End-of-Life Definition
The heart of the warranty is the capacity commitment: the pack remains warranted while its usable capacity stays above a stated percentage of rated capacity, measured under stated conditions. The wording to look for covers four points:
- The reference: rated capacity of the model as shipped, not a recalculated figure
- The threshold: the percentage below which the pack is considered defective
- The measurement: discharge current, temperature and cutoff voltage used to judge it
- The boundary: whether capacity below the threshold is a warranty event, and what remedy follows
A pack that has lost capacity gradually is handled through this clause, while a pack that failed outright is handled through the defects clause. A complete warranty covers both paths, and states who performs the capacity measurement and with what equipment.
Conditions and Exclusions
The exclusions list is where claims are actually decided. Typical items that void or limit a lithium battery warranty include:
- Operation outside the stated voltage, current or temperature limits, including charging below the minimum cell temperature
- Use of a charger or inverter profile not approved for the chemistry
- Deep discharge during storage, or storage at a state of charge outside the recommended range
- Physical damage, water ingress where the ingress rating does not cover it, or unauthorized opening of the housing
- Repairs, parameter changes or firmware updates performed by parties other than the manufacturer or its authorized service
- Serial numbers removed, altered or not traceable to the original shipment
None of these are unreasonable, but the buyer should read them as operating instructions for the warranty: if your market's installers routinely face conditions on this list, the product or the training program needs to address it before launch, because the exclusions will otherwise absorb a share of the installed base.
What the Remedy Covers
When a valid claim is accepted, the remedy can be repair, replacement, or a credit against a future order, and the differences matter to your service cost. Questions to settle in writing: does the remedy cover freight both ways, does it cover labor for removal and reinstallation, is a replacement unit new or refurbished, does the replacement carry the remaining warranty or a fresh term, and how are prorated settlements calculated if the document uses them. For cross-border trade, the customs handling of warranty returns and replacements should also be agreed, because shipping a replacement has the same documentation load as a sale.
The Claims and RMA Process
A workable claims process is defined before the first shipment. The document should state what evidence a claim requires, commonly the serial number, the purchase reference, the observed behavior and photographs or a short video, and where BMS logs or an inverter communication log are available, those as well. It should state the response window, who decides validity, how units travel back if a physical return is needed, and how quickly replacements ship. Importers should map this flow into their own support process, so a customer complaint reaches the factory with the right evidence in one pass instead of three.
Checklist Before You Sign
- Headline term stated with its conditions: years, cycles, depth of discharge, rates, temperature, end-of-life capacity
- Warranty start point and any registration requirement defined
- Capacity retention clause with measurement conditions and the responsible party
- Exclusions reviewed against real operating conditions in your market
- Remedy, freight and labor coverage, and replacement terms defined
- Claims evidence, response windows and RMA logistics defined
- Terms confirmed in writing by the manufacturer for the exact model and order
Where YueQi Fits
YueQi New Energy issues warranty terms per product family and per project, covering its 12.8V and 25.6V packs, 51.2V mobile storage batteries, home storage units and portable power stations. Rather than quoting a number out of context, the company provides the term, the capacity retention definition, the exclusions and the claims flow together, and confirms them in writing for each model before the purchase order is placed, so the importer can extend the same logic downstream without gaps.
Summary
A lithium battery warranty is a set of definitions with a number attached. Read the end-of-life capacity clause, the operating conditions, the exclusions and the claims process before reading the headline term, and require the full text in writing for each model. The buyer who signs a warranty they have parsed this way can stand behind it downstream, which is the entire commercial point of the document.
