Why RV House Banks Are Moving to Lithium
The house bank in a recreational vehicle supplies every load that does not run from the engine: lighting, the water pump, refrigerator controls, ventilation fans, electronics and, through an inverter, the household sockets. For decades this bank was built from lead-acid batteries. A 12v lithium battery pack changes the design arithmetic. LiFePO4 cells give more usable energy per kilogram, accept a deeper daily discharge, and hold their voltage almost flat until the bank is nearly empty. For importers, distributors and OEM brands that serve the RV and caravan market, knowing how end users size these banks is the first step toward stocking the right capacities.
A 12.8V LiFePO4 pack contains four cells in series. Its nominal voltage matches the 12V equipment already installed in most vehicles, and it works with chargers that offer a lithium profile. That compatibility is why the 12V class remains the default entry point for RV upgrades, even as larger rigs move to 24V or 48V systems for high-power inverters.
Start With a Load List
Sizing starts with an inventory of the loads and their daily hours. The table below shows a typical example for a mid-size motorhome or caravan. The figures are illustrative; every owner should measure or estimate their own usage.
| Load | Power | Hours per day | Energy |
|---|---|---|---|
| LED lighting | 40 W | 5 | 200 Wh |
| 12V refrigerator, average draw | 60 W | 10 | 600 Wh |
| Water pump | 80 W | 0.5 | 40 Wh |
| Ventilation fans | 30 W | 6 | 180 Wh |
| Router, chargers, electronics | 50 W | 8 | 400 Wh |
The daily total in this example is about 1,420 Wh. Microwave ovens, coffee makers and air conditioners do not usually run all day, but they set the peak power requirement, which matters for the inverter and the BMS current limit rather than for daily energy.
From Daily Energy to Bank Size
Battery energy is nominal voltage multiplied by capacity. A 12.8V 200Ah pack stores about 2,560 Wh. LiFePO4 banks are commonly planned to use 80 to 90 percent of rated capacity, so one 200Ah pack covers roughly two days of the load list above, or one day with comfortable reserve. Owners who camp for several days without hookups usually connect two packs in parallel. Paralleling LiFePO4 packs is common practice, but cable length, terminal resistance and balancing current should follow the supplier's installation guidance, so ask for the paralleling instructions before quoting a two-pack system.
When 12V Is Enough and When to Step Up
Current rises fast at low voltage. A 2,000 W inverter draws roughly 160 to 200 A from a 12V bank at full load, which demands thick cabling and a BMS rated for that continuous current. Above this class, many builders move to a 24V or 48V architecture to halve or quarter the current. The same catalog logic applies: a 25.6V bank serves mid-size inverters, while 51.2V packs suit large motorhomes that need household-level power. Choosing the voltage class before choosing capacity avoids rework later.
Charging Sources on an RV
- A shore converter or charger with a LiFePO4 absorption profile, typically in the 14.2 to 14.6 V region for a four-cell pack
- Solar through an MPPT controller set to the lithium charge voltage and a safe current limit
- The engine alternator, ideally through a DC-DC charger that limits current and protects both the alternator and the BMS
Each source needs its own setting. Mixing a lead-acid profile with lithium cells shortens life, and a converter that equalizes at high voltage can trigger BMS protection on every cycle. Confirm the recommended charge parameters in writing for the exact pack model before you publish a compatibility list.
Cold Weather Behavior
LiFePO4 cells should not be charged below freezing, because lithium plating can damage them. Quality packs include a BMS with low-temperature charge protection that blocks or gates charging until the cells warm up. Discharge at low temperature is less restricted, though available capacity is reduced. For owners who travel in winter, explain this behavior at the point of sale: it is a protection feature, not a defect. Winter storage at a partial state of charge is a common recommendation; the exact guidance should come from the supplier in writing.
Weight, Space and Usable Energy
Lead-acid banks are normally planned to use only half their rated capacity, so a bank that delivers 1,000 usable Wh needs roughly 2,000 Wh of lead-acid rating. The same usable energy fits in a lithium pack of about 1,200 Wh rating, and the pack weighs far less. The saved weight is payload, and the smaller footprint is storage space, two selling points that RV dealers understand immediately.
What Importers Should Confirm Before Ordering
- The datasheet for the exact model, with the test conditions behind the capacity and cycle-life figures
- The BMS protection list, including low-temperature charge protection and current limits
- Terminal type, case dimensions and fit against the battery boxes used in your market
- Certificate copies, limited to CE and UN 38.3 for transport, with the model number on each document
- Minimum order quantity, lead time, warranty and private-label options, confirmed in writing
Where YueQi Fits
YueQi New Energy, based in Zhongshan, Guangdong, produces 12.8V LiFePO4 packs in 100, 150 and 200 Ah and a 25.6V series in 100, 200 and 300 Ah, alongside 51.2V mobile storage units and portable power stations. Project-specific figures such as continuous current limits, case options and connector choices are to be confirmed in writing against the current catalog. CE and UN 38.3 certificates are available on request for the relevant product families.
Summary
Sizing an RV house bank is a five-step exercise: list the loads, add the daily energy, add reserve for the nights between charges, choose the voltage class that matches the inverter, and verify the charging sources. A 12v lithium battery bank built this way delivers predictable range on the road and a clear upgrade story for dealers. Confirm the protection list, the charge parameters and the commercial terms in writing, and the same platform can serve an entire RV product range.
