A Sample Is a Test Project, Not a Small Order
The sample round in a LiFePO4 sourcing project exists to answer one question: does this pack, from this factory, behave as the datasheet says in your application. It is not a chance to receive a few units quickly and move on. Buyers who run the sample round as an informal step usually pay later, in pilot delays or field failures, because the issues a sample plan catches, a protection threshold set differently from the document, a protocol frame the inverter rejects, a terminal that loosens under vibration, are exactly the issues that are cheap to fix now and expensive after a container has landed.
The discipline that makes a sample round useful is agreeing the acceptance criteria before the units ship, so both sides measure the same things the same way.
Start With the Documents
Before any test is run, the file that arrives with the samples should be complete:
- Datasheet for the exact model, with test conditions stated for capacity and cycle life
- BMS protection list, with thresholds for over-charge, over-discharge, over-current and temperature events
- Communication protocol description, if the pack talks to an inverter or monitoring system
- Transport evidence for the model, the UN 38.3 test summary, and the safety data sheet
- Market conformity documents, such as the declaration behind the CE mark, with certificate copies on request
- Warranty text and the manufacturer's stated exclusions, as covered in the warranty article of this guide
A missing document is a finding in itself, because whatever the factory cannot produce for samples will not appear for production either.
Electrical Verification
The core electrical checks compare the delivered pack against its own datasheet:
- Open circuit voltage on arrival, and whether the state of charge matches the shipping agreement
- Rated capacity: discharge at the datasheet's stated current to the stated cutoff, and measure amp-hours and watt-hours delivered, at a controlled temperature
- Usable capacity through the inverter, if one is in the loop, since the whole system's usable energy is what the project actually sells
- Internal resistance as stated, and its consistency across the sample units
- Charge behavior at the recommended profile, including the return capacity after a full cycle
Two or three units are enough for this round; the point is the agreement between document and reality, not statistical depth.
BMS Protection Triggers
The protection list should be exercised, not just read. With suitable equipment, or witnessed at the factory, verify that the pack actually disconnects at the documented thresholds: over-charge voltage, over-discharge voltage, charge and discharge over-current, and short circuit conditions. Check that recovery works as described, whether automatic after a delay or by charger connection, and that the pack reports the event through its communication port. A protection list that exists on paper but not on the board is the classic finding of a well-run sample round.
Communication and System Integration
For packs that talk to an inverter, this is the test that decides the project. Connect the sample to the inverter brand and model the project actually uses, load the protocol variant the supplier specified, and run the system through its real routines: charge from solar, discharge into loads, shutdown on low state of charge, wake behavior, and parallel operation if the project will run packs in parallel. Record which protocol version and cable pinout worked, and keep that combination as the project baseline. Integration issues found here are solved with a firmware parameter or a cable; found after mass production, they cost a season of sales.
Mechanical and Environmental Checks
The physical checks close the gap between laboratory behavior and life in the field: terminal torque to the stated value and re-torque after vibration exposure, fit into the destination enclosure or rack, connector mating force, weight and dimensions against the datasheet, and a packaged drop test on the shipping carton to see how the pack survives the journey it is about to make repeatedly. Where the project faces heat or cold, a bench check of the documented operating and charging temperature limits, including any low-temperature charge restriction the BMS enforces, is worth the week it takes.
Short Cycling and Field Exposure
A sample round cannot prove a 6,000-cycle claim, and should not try. What it can do is run a shortened cycling block, for example a few dozen cycles at the project's depth of discharge, and watch the trend: capacity per cycle, voltage behavior under load, temperature rise, and balance behavior across the series groups. A pack that drifts in the first dozens of cycles is telling the truth about its future. Some buyers also place one unit in a real installation for a month as a field witness while the pilot batch is built, which costs nothing and reveals the issues a bench cannot.
From Sample to Pilot
Close the round with a written result: a pass or fail against each agreed criterion, the deviations found, and the corrections the factory committed to, dated. Only then order the pilot batch, built on the production line, which verifies the process rather than the design. The sample round proves the product; the pilot proves the factory; mass production proves the repeat. Skipping a stage merges three kinds of risk into one shipment, and the freight of a failed container is the smallest part of that cost.
Where YueQi Fits
YueQi New Energy supplies sample quantities of its 12.8V and 25.6V pack families, 51.2V mobile storage batteries, home storage units and portable power stations, each with its datasheet, BMS protection list, protocol document and transport papers. Sample acceptance criteria are agreed in writing before dispatch, factory-witnessed protection testing can be arranged, and sample MOQ and lead time are confirmed per project in writing, so the round ends with a documented pass rather than an impression.
Summary
A sample order is worth what the test plan behind it is worth: documents first, then capacity and protection verification, then integration with the real inverter, then mechanical and environmental checks, and a written close-out. Run that sequence before the pilot batch and the scale-up decision rests on measurements instead of hopes, which is the cheapest quality program a battery importer will ever run.
