Why the Cell Question Comes First
A LiFePO4 pack is cells plus a battery management system plus housing and wiring, but the cells set the ceiling on everything the pack can do. Cycle life, capacity retention over the years, behavior in heat and cold, and safety margins all start with the cell. Two packs with identical-looking datasheets can age very differently because the cells inside differ in grade, in age or even in origin. For an importer who signs a warranty toward its own customers, the cell question is therefore not a technical detail reserved for engineers. It is the first commercial question to settle with a supplier.
Cell Formats Used in Storage Packs
Three physical formats dominate stationary and mobile storage. Prismatic cells are large rectangular aluminum cases, efficient to assemble into big packs and common in storage products. Cylindrical cells in the larger lithium formats are mechanically robust and well suited to automated assembly, with a long record in power tools and smaller packs. Pouch cells are soft-packed, light and flexible in shape, but they need careful mechanical support inside the housing. Each format can be excellent; what matters is that the supplier can say which format a quoted pack uses and why that format fits the application.
- Prismatic: high packing efficiency, common in 12.8V, 25.6V and 51.2V storage packs
- Cylindrical: strong mechanical format and a mature supply chain
- Pouch: light and shape-flexible, demands good clamping and thermal design
New, Surplus and Reclaimed Cells
The market contains three kinds of supply. New cells come directly from cell manufacturers. Surplus cells are unused but have been stored for a long time, or they fall outside the original customer's specification. Reclaimed cells are taken from used packs and resold. All three have legitimate uses in cost-driven projects, but a pack sold as new must contain new cells. Ask the question directly and ask for the answer in writing: what grade definition does the supplier use, and what is the date code of the cells in the offered batch. A supplier who answers these questions without hesitation is a different category of partner from one who calls the question unnecessary.
Questions to Put to Any Pack Supplier
- Which cell manufacturer and which exact cell model are inside the pack?
- What is the format, and what are the rated capacity and internal resistance of that cell model?
- Are the cells new, surplus or reclaimed, and how does the supplier define the grade?
- What date codes and batch numbers apply to the shipment, and can they be traced back to cell production records?
- Under what conditions were the capacity and cycle-life figures measured: rate, temperature, depth of discharge and end-of-life threshold?
- How are cells matched before assembly, for example by capacity, voltage and internal resistance grouping?
- How were the cells stored before assembly, and for how long?
Reading Cycle Test Data Correctly
Cycle-life figures are only comparable when the test conditions match. The four conditions that change the result most are the discharge rate, the test temperature, the depth of discharge per cycle, and the capacity threshold that defines end of life. A figure from a gentle laboratory schedule will not reproduce exactly in a hot off-grid installation that cycles every day. Ask for the test report, read its conditions, and use the number as a comparison tool between suppliers rather than as a promise for one specific site. Independent third-party reports carry more weight than a summary typed into a datasheet, and a serious supplier should be willing to say which kind of evidence exists for each model.
What the Price Split Tells You
Cells are the largest cost item in a storage pack, so the way a quotation splits price between cells, BMS and housing says a lot about what is inside. Ask suppliers to break the quotation down, at least in broad categories. An offer that prices the pack far below the plausible cell cost for its capacity deserves a direct question about cell grade and age, asked in writing. The answer is sometimes a genuine efficiency, such as a long-term cell supply agreement, and sometimes it is exactly the risk this article describes. Either way, the question costs nothing and the written answer has value long after the price is forgotten.
Matching Cells to the Application
| Application | Cell priority | Question that matters most |
|---|---|---|
| Daily-cycling solar storage | Long cycle life at moderate current | What end-of-life threshold backs the cycle figure? |
| Backup power, rare discharge | Calendar life and low self-discharge | How old are the cells at shipment? |
| Mobile and in-vehicle use | Vibration tolerance and peak current | What mounting and clamping does the pack design assume? |
| Hot climates | Thermal margins | What is the maximum rated cell temperature in operation? |
Documents to Request in Writing
Cell sourcing becomes verifiable through documents. Request the cell datasheet for the exact model, the test report behind any cycle-life claim, and a batch list linking the packs in your order to cell date codes. Suppliers differ in how much of this they can disclose, because cell purchase agreements sometimes limit redistribution of manufacturer documents. What a supplier can and cannot share is a fact to confirm in writing before the contract is signed, not after a claim has been filed.
Where YueQi Fits
YueQi New Energy builds LiFePO4 storage packs and integrated storage products in Zhongshan, Guangdong. The catalog spans 12.8V and 25.6V battery packs, 51.2V mobile storage batteries, home energy storage units and portable power stations. For buyers who need to document cell origin toward their own customers, the evidence available for each product family is to be confirmed in writing, and CE and UN 38.3 documents are provided for the families concerned. This written, model-by-model approach is what keeps cell questions answerable months after delivery.
Summary
Cells decide how a pack ages, so buyers should ask about cell format, grade, date codes, matching practice and the test conditions behind cycle figures. Get the answers as documents, not as sales conversation. A supplier who can put the cell story in writing is a supplier whose warranty is worth the paper it is printed on.
