What a Battery Warranty Usually Covers
A lithium battery warranty is a promise about two things: that the product was free of defects in materials and workmanship when it left the factory, and that it will retain a defined share of its capacity for a defined period or cycle count. Everything else in the document is qualification around those two promises. Reading a warranty well means reading the qualifications as carefully as the headline, because two warranties with the same headline can differ enormously in what happens when a pack actually fails.
Capacity Thresholds and How They Are Defined
The capacity clause deserves the closest reading. A typical structure promises that the pack will hold no less than a stated percentage of its rated capacity within the warranty period, measured under stated conditions. The conditions are where warranties are won and lost: at what discharge rate is capacity measured, at what temperature, after how many cycles or which calendar date, and who performs the measurement. Ask for the measurement procedure in writing, and ask whether the warranty references cycle count, calendar time or whichever comes first. A clause that names its test conditions is a clause that can be applied fairly years later.
What Commonly Voids Coverage
Exclusions are standard across the industry, and most rejected claims fall into a short list of causes:
- Operation outside the temperature range in the datasheet, especially charging below freezing
- Over-discharge below the protection threshold, often from storage without top-ups
- Use of a charger or inverter settings outside the specified charge parameters
- Opening the housing, bypassing or re-flashing the BMS, or otherwise altering the pack
- Physical damage from drops, vibration, flooding or incorrect mounting
- Missing records: no purchase document, no serial number, no installation or maintenance history
None of these exclusions is unreasonable; each corresponds to a failure mode the warranty was never priced to carry. The practical lesson for importers is to keep the records that prove the pack was used correctly, because in a claim the burden of showing correct use usually falls on the holder of the warranty.
Full Replacement and Pro-Rata Terms
When a claim succeeds, the remedy differs more than buyers expect. Some warranties replace the unit in full within an initial period and then apply a pro-rata scale, where the credit toward a replacement shrinks with age. Some repair or replace with functionally equivalent units. Some cover product cost only and leave freight, labor and installation to the claimant. Before signing, map the remedy year by year: what the customer receives in year one, in year three, and at the end of the term, and who pays to ship a failed pack from the site and to return the replacement.
The Claim File
A claim succeeds or stalls on its documentation. A complete claim file contains the purchase document, the pack serial number and its batch, photographs of the installed unit and of any damage, the BMS event log or fault history where communication is available, the charger and inverter settings in force, and a short timeline of operation from the installer. Suppliers can process a file like that in days. A claim that consists of the sentence that the battery stopped working gives the supplier's service team nothing to work with and invites the narrowest reading of the exclusions.
Warranty Clauses Worth Questioning
| Clause | What to check | Question to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Capacity retention threshold | Percentage, period and the measurement conditions | What procedure and conditions define the measured capacity? |
| Cycle or calendar basis | Which limit ends the term first | Does daily cycling shorten the term? |
| Exclusion list | Whether normal application events are excluded | Are grid events and transport damage covered? |
| Remedy scale | Full replacement versus pro-rata credit | What does year three of the remedy look like? |
| Costs of a claim | Freight, labor and duty on replacements | Who pays freight on a failed unit and its replacement? |
| Registration | Whether claims require prior registration | What must be registered, and by when? |
Passing the Warranty Downstream
An importer who sells onward usually offers its own warranty to installers or end customers. The two documents must align: the downstream promise should never exceed what the upstream supplier contract supports, and the difference between them is commercial risk carried by the importer. Where a supplier's terms are shorter than the market expects, the gap is a negotiation item, a pricing item or a reason to qualify a second source, and it should be settled before the first container, not after the first claim.
Getting Terms in Writing
Warranty terms are order-specific commercial facts. The warranty period, capacity threshold, remedy scale and claim procedure for an order of YueQi LiFePO4 products are to be confirmed in writing against that order, so that the document the importer holds matches the document the factory honors. Standard terms can be shared during quotation; the binding version is the one attached to the order.
Where YueQi Fits
YueQi New Energy manufactures LiFePO4 storage packs and integrated storage products in Zhongshan, Guangdong, across 12.8V and 25.6V packs, 51.2V mobile storage batteries, home energy storage units and portable power stations. Serial-numbered units, CE and UN 38.3 documentation and written order terms give an importer the raw material for a downstream warranty it can defend. The claims procedure and terms for each order are to be confirmed in writing.
Summary
A battery warranty is read in its conditions: the capacity threshold and how it is measured, the exclusions and how plausible they are in your application, the remedy scale over time, and who pays the costs of a claim. Collect the records that prove correct use from day one, and keep the upstream and downstream promises aligned. The warranty that matters is the one attached to the order, in writing.
