What Remote Sites Demand From a Power System
An off-grid cabin, a research station or a farm building past the last pole shares one condition: there is no grid to fall back on, and the nearest technician may be hours away. The power system must be sized for the worst week of the year, not the average day, and it must be simple enough to be serviced by the person on site. Off grid battery planning therefore starts from the seasonal load sheet and from a clear answer to the autonomy question: how many days should the site run if the sun does not cooperate?
The Seasonal Load Sheet
Loads at a remote site split into a constant base and a seasonal variable part. The base runs all year; the variable part grows with occupancy and with the season. An illustrative sheet for a four-season cabin:
| Load | Power | Hours per day | Energy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Refrigerator | 150 W | 8 h | 1200 Wh |
| Lighting, LED | 80 W | 6 h | 480 Wh |
| Water pump | 250 W | 1 h | 250 Wh |
| Router and communications | 20 W | 24 h | 480 Wh |
| Tools and entertainment | 200 W | 3 h | 600 Wh |
The illustrative total is about 3 kWh per day in the shoulder season. Winter adds lighting hours and, in many designs, the fans and controllers of a heating system; summer adds well pump duty and guests. Both extremes belong in the sheet, and the bank is sized for the larger one.
Choosing the Bank Voltage and the Product Class
The 12.8V class suits small systems and DC-first loads. Where loads grow past a kilowatt or cables run long, the 25.6V class halves the current for the same power, and cable sizes follow. The YueQi catalog covers 12.8V packs at 100, 150 and 200 amp-hours and 25.6V packs at 100, 200 and 300 amp-hours, with parallel connection within the limits of the manual. For whole-cabin service with AC loads and solar input on one unit, the integrated home storage units at 4.2 kW with 8 kWh and 6.2 kW with 16 kWh remove the need to assemble a system from parts.
Autonomy Days and the Generator Question
Autonomy is the usable energy of the bank divided by the daily load. Two 25.6V 200 Ah packs hold about 10.2 kWh nominal, which is roughly 8 kWh usable, so a 3.5 kWh per day site carries a little over two days without sun. The design choice is between buying a third day of storage or accepting a generator as the backstop. Generators are cheap to buy and unpleasant to run; they are also the fastest way to recharge a bank after a stretch of bad weather, which is why many remote sites size for one to two days of autonomy and keep a small generator for the exception.
Winter and Low Sun Behavior
In high latitudes the array yield in December can be a fraction of the July figure, and snow on the panels zeroes it entirely. LiFePO4 chemistry accepts discharge in cold weather but must not be charged below freezing unless the model provides for it, so the battery belongs indoors in a conditioned space. The charge controller profile, the low-voltage disconnect settings and the model's temperature specification should be confirmed in writing for the climate the site actually experiences.
Monitoring and Remote Management
- BMS data over RS485 or CAN into a site controller, so state of charge and alarms are visible without opening the cabinet
- A log of charge and discharge behavior, which turns a service call into an informed visit with the right spare
- Clear labeling of fuse positions and settings, because the person on site is rarely the person who installed the system
Where YueQi Fits
YueQi New Energy, based in Zhongshan, Guangdong, builds LiFePO4 storage across the classes remote sites use: 12.8V and 25.6V packs, 51.2V mobile storage from about 5 kWh to 15 kWh, integrated home units at 4.2 kW with 8 kWh and 6.2 kW with 16 kWh, and portable stations from 400 W to 2500 W for the build phase. Specifications follow the catalog per model, with CE and UN 38.3 marks shown on the literature and certificate copies available on request. Model-specific temperature ranges, parallel limits and commercial terms are to be confirmed in writing.
